So long as you have a reasonable head for heights, this iconic, straightforward hike offers stunning views of the gorge.

Pros

  • Stunning views up and down the Columbia Gorge.
  • Fun, unique hike zig-zagging up the side of the rock, once the core of a long dead volcano. Around 45 minutes to the summit.

Cons

  • $10 day use fee for Beacon Rock State Park (enforced).
  • Although the path is flanked by sturdy handrails, parents of small children should exercise appropriate caution – it wouldn’t be impossible to plummet off the track. If you or your children suffer from vertigo, look elsewhere.
  • Not a lot else for little ones nearby (the less aggressive waterfall hikes are mostly on the other side of the river).

in the area

Back towards Vancouver, Lacamas Park in Camas, Washington is very beautiful. Further still, Fort Vancouver provides a fascinating glimpse into the region’s history.

The more accessible Vista House at Crown Point offers the other iconic gorge view. Stunning child-friendly hiking opportunities in the gorge include Latourell Falls, Triple Falls, Elowah Falls and (my favorite) Wahclella Falls.
