Avalon Theatre and Wunderland

On a rainy day – and let's face it, we have a few of those – the Avalon provides a relatively inexpensive way to entertain the troops.

Pros

  • A good range of second run movies in a cheap and cheerful environment.
  • The nickel arcade (filling two rooms) has a lot of variety, including the classics: skeeball and air hockey. Compared to the ludicrous pricing at most modern arcades, it’s inexpensive.
  • Friendly staff to fix the regularly failing ticket output mechanisms.

Cons

  • Cinema seating is not the most comfortable.
  • Expect a bit of audience participation from the younger children during the movies. That said, if your children are liable to exclaim, you won’t feel guilty. So perhaps a pro.
  • Quite a few of the arcade games involve shooting (deer, zombies, robots from the future etc). I felt it could be a bit frightening for small children, but then again maybe I’m getting old.
  • Large quantities of tickets exchanged for small quantities of tat. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose.
