Whitaker Ponds Nature Park

There's not a lot to it, but this little spot on the Columbia slough offers some pretty views and opportunities for nature spotting.

Pros

  • A gazebo, a short walkway to a dock and some interpretive signs.
  • Pretty places to snack.
  • The ponds are nice to look at from the half-mile looping trail. You’ll spot birds and wildflowers.

Cons

  • The loop trail is not currently a loop, but (going clockwise from the parking lot) stops at a fence in the southwest corner.
  • Not a lot to it.

There are more wetlands on the other side of I-5 at Smith & Bybee. Reed Lake feels similar, if a little more tamed. Out of town, Virginia Lake on Sauvie Island and especially  are great wetlands spots.
