The Tamawanas Falls trailhead lies about 30 miles south of Hood River on Highway 35.

Pros

  • An exceptionally beautiful, varied winding trail along a roaring stream, through forest, past gigantic rocks, into a giant amphitheater.
  • A good length trail for little legs, under four miles round trip.
  • Plenty of dramatic space to stop for a picnic beside the falls before heading home.

Cons

  • You’ll need a valid Forest Service Recreation Pass to park at the trailhead, and you can’t buy one on site, so grab one before you set out.
  • Quite a schlep out from Portland.
  • Despite that, it’s a very busy trail. So if you want to commune with nature in solitude, look elsewhere.
