Reed Lake

Tucked away on the North side of Reed's campus is a lovely little nature trail beside a lake. You'll forget you're just ten minutes walk from Trader Joe's.

Pros

  • A natural habitat in the city.
  • Narrow paths and wooden walkways out to islands add fun and interest.
  • The short (mile at most?) loop around the lake is manageable for little hikers.

Cons

  • Tricky terrain for strollers.
  • Not as pretty as the Rhododendron Garden, nor as extensive as Oaks Bottom, but hey, that’s just Portland’s fault for spoiling us.

in the area

Extend your walk a little further to include Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden. Otto’s Sausage Kitchen at 4138 Southeast Woodstock Boulevard is a lovely stop for an al fresco hot dog on a nice day, following your exertions.

Virginia Lake on Sauvie Island is a lot larger and has many of the same features. Oaks Bottom, Smith & Bybee, Hoyt ArboretumMacleay Trail, Marshall Park and Tryon Creek all offer beautiful, manageable hiking opportunities in the city.
