Pup Creek Falls

A strenuous but peaceful hike with a hidden gem of a waterfall as its payoff. To get there, take SR 224 east from Estacada for 15 miles; turn right at Fish Creek Road; there's a parking lot not far up on the right and the Clackamas River Trail begins on the opposite side of the road. The spur to Pup Creek Falls is well signed, about 4 miles down trail.

Pros

  • A very lovely waterfall, once you get there.
  • Much less busy than your average Portland region waterfall trail.
  • Very pretty drive along the Clackamas River valley.

Cons

  • Out and back.
  • Ambitious for smaller children; 8 miles round trip according to the guide books, feels like more.
  • You can’t get very close to the falls themselves (though they’re still magnificent from a distance).

Eagle Creek and Silver Falls State Park both offer strenuous waterfall hikes. More generally, we are spoiled with waterfall viewing opportunities
