Portland Urban Adventure Quest

Here's something a little different. Urban Adventure Quest is a real world "interactive adventure" that is driven by a web based app on your smartphone.

4
hours of fun

Open

Available every day, although major holidays will likely close some of the destinations. Daylight required.

Pros

  • Cleverly takes you to the most interesting pockets of downtown, including both the big tourist draws and a few fun features that even seasoned locals may have overlooked.
  • Great concept.
  • Several hours of entertainment; some interesting puzzles to solve and you get a little exercise too.

Cons

  • It costs $49 per team.
  • Must have a well charged smartphone, plus a pencil and paper.
  • Ages 10+ for maximum fun IMHO. Younger children will certainly be able to help out with some of the puzzles, but could not be expected to solve them on their own (i.e. some of the answers involve word play or cultural knowledge). There’s also one question that is literally impossible to solve unless you are over five feet tall.
  • Fairly obvious, and not really a criticism, but once you’ve done it, you’ve done it i.e. no repeat value.
  • Web app design / user experience not the smoothest. Then again, I’m picky.

in the area

Everything downtown has to offer, including blacklit pirate golf, fountains in the summer and the farmers’ market most Saturdays.

if you like this…

If you like to be outdoors and can take or leave the quiz aspect, consider a simple hike
