Eagle Creek

The hike out to Tunnel Falls and back is one of the most iconic in the gorge, but at 12 miles round trip it's too much of a stretch for most little legs. Never fear, Eagle Creek is a feast for the senses all the way along...

Take I-84 out to exit #41. If you get here early enough you can park at the little ranger station lot just past the fish hatchery.

Pros

  • One of the most dramatic and beautiful trails in the already dramatic and beautiful Columbia Gorge. Seriously awe-inspiring.
  • Opportunity to cool off at Punch Bowl Falls (just off the main trail; going straight there and back from the trailhead measures in at 3.8 miles).
  • Customize the hike according to everyone’s stamina – there’s no single destination or bad place to turn around. We U-turned just a little past High Bridge on our last visit and forked off at Punch Bowl Falls on the return leg, 8 miles round trip.

Cons

  • Out and back.
  • Parts of trail are at least mildly treacherous, with vertiginous drops beside the narrow path. Thus: more suited to┬áless rambunctious / older children.
  • It’s unsurprisingly one of the most popular hikes in the gorge and, being largely single track, busy. Thus: not a serene idyll. Few places to pee discreetly.

in the area

…are many other amazing hiking opportunities involving waterfalls. Our favorites are Wahclella Falls and Latourell Falls.

Triple Falls hike is in the same genre. Silver Falls State Park offers even more waterfalls per mile.
